Abstract

The article is devoted to the historical formation, development and decline of the Scottish Gaelic language. Its present status as minority, but official, language of Scotland and activities being implemented by the Scottish government for its preservation are outlined. The peculiarities of the current language situation in Scotland are revealed, statistical data on the speakers of Scottish Gaelic are presented and analyzed.
